Support Audios

SelfHelpWorks offers users support audios in each of our three substance-related behavioral change courses. These audios add a unique element to the courses and are used to review and expand upon course concepts and to prepare the user for the future.

At SelfHelpWorks, we recognize that users learn in different ways; some people learn best by reading, some by viewing, some through kinesthetic means (by doing), and some by listening.  It is our responsibility to offer an array of learning options for every type of learner.

We have three behavioral change courses that are centered around substances:

  1. LivingLean—Food
  2. LivingFree—Tobacco
  3. LivingSmart—Alcohol

All three of these courses have 16 prerecorded support audios that are made available to participants at specific times during the courses. Each audio serves a distinct purpose and enhances user experience by emphasizing key course content at strategic moments of the training.

On the website, audios are found in the course library and listed with a short "About Audio" description and the transcript:

Audios are also accessible through the mobile app (where they can be listened to in off-line mode/without internet connection). Audios played through the mobile app automatically appear with a description and transcript and continue playing even when the phone enters locked mode. This allows users to listen uninterrupted and without hassle (while driving, for instance).

Four categories of support audio:

Review

These audios reiterate the main content in preceding sessions, particularly the core sessions that prepare the user for their lifestyle change and begin the brain-training process. Review and repetition are essential parts of our structured cognitive training courses. These audios are simply titled "Review Audios."

Visualization and relaxation

These audios promote a state of calmness in the participant while directing their focus to the benefits of their new lifestyle. One of these audios is titled “Weekend Visualization” as it is directly related to the weekend, typically a time when many people are highly vulnerable to setbacks. “Visual Declaring” is another audio that uses visualization techniques to encourage the user to "see" themselves successful in changing their unhealthy behavior.

concept expansion

All major themes and concepts are covered in videos and summarized in reading materials and assignments (which frequently appeal to kinesthetic learners). The audios in this group offer further explanation of concepts from different angles. Audios like "Being the Boss," for example, delve deeper into what it means to create urges and "beat them to the punch," thereby bringing the user a greater sense of control.

Preparing for life after the course

Audios entitled “Keys to the Future" and “Completion: A New Beginning” prepare the user for sustained success as the courses come to an end. Many users are excited as they complete a course but are understandably nervous as well--these audios help to solidify the self-image of the user as someone who no longer engages in their unhealthy behavior.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE USER:

Users have many ways to review important course information, and all learner-types are accommodated in each substance-related behavioral change course. The support audios are easily accessible through the website and mobile app, are provided with transcripts, and can be reviewed as often as the user finds them helpful.
